Marvel Studios is working on a spin-off series centered on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, based on the successful Disney+ show WandaVision.
The first season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Netflix followed Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff as she created an alternate universe based on different decades of TV sitcoms, with Paul Bettany’s Vision still alive in the realm following his death in Avengers: Infinity War.
WandaVision was a smashing triumph for both Disney+ and Marvel, receiving acclaim from reviewers and becoming the first Marvel series to receive 23 Emmy nods.
Outstanding Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costumes, Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour), and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the fan-favorite single “Agatha All Along” were among the three Primetime Emmy awards it received.
While fans wait for the Scarlet Witch to reappear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness next year, it appears like Marvel has another surprise in store for fans of the series.
According to Variety, Marvel Studios and Disney+ are working on a spin-off series focusing on Hahn’s evil witch Agatha Harkness for WandaVision.
While narrative details are presently being kept under wraps, insiders say the show will be “a dark comedy” with WandaVision chief writer Jac Schaeffer returning in the same role as executive producer.
Marvel Studios and Schaeffer and Hahn’s agents have declined to comment.
Hahn’s portrayal of evil witch Agatha in WandaVision has been praised as one of the best parts of the Disney+ series, from her irritating inquisitive neighbor to the rug pull reveal of her villainy in “Agatha All Along.”
Marvel’s intention to cash in on the character’s success should excite fans, especially since Schaeffer is slated to return as the spin-writer off’s following her Emmy-nominated work on the mothership series.
The spin-off also comes at a fascinating time for both the studio and Disney+, as several other MCU projects, notably Loki season 2, are in various stages of development or filming, while WandaVision serves as a lead-up.
The spin-off also arrives at an opportune time for both the studio and Disney+, as several other MCU titles, like Loki season 2, are in various stages of development or filming, while WandaVision acted as a lead-up to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
While narrative details for the planned WandaVision spin-off are currently unknown, there are many possibilities for Agatha in her spin-off.
Given her late-17th-century roots, the villain has hundreds of years of backstory to delve into, as well as the prospect of her striving to break free from the mental prison Wanda imprisoned her in in “The Series Finale.”
In the interim, in anticipation of the Scarlet Witch’s reappearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in March 2022, fans can watch WandaVision on Disney+.
