Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan, an upcoming documentary series from Netflix, enticed audiences with a trailer. The series offers a fascinating look into the story of a dangerous criminal and his purported multiple personality disorder. Billy Milligan was accused of armed robbery and raping three women on the Ohio State University campus in the late 1970s, and the series delves into his case. Milligan was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder by psychiatrists at the time of his arrest. Milligan’s attorneys claimed insanity, stating that his other personalities took control during the attack and he was unaware of his actions.
Milligan was the first person diagnosed with this disorder to utilise it as a defence, and the first person acquitted for a crime of this magnitude using that defence.
Netflix has provided a behind-the-scenes peek at the next series, which will premiere on September 22. The question of whether Milligan was playing the room is not only present but also serves as the narrative’s driving force. Whether mentally sick or not, the image of a disturbed man gives you the creeps right away. Take a look at the official trailer after the jump:
This isn’t the first time Hollywood has looked into Milligan’s case for amusement purposes, as it has with so many other weird criminal sagas. The Crowded Room, a fictitious TV version featuring Tom Holland as Milligan, has yet to be released. Monsters Inside are certain to elicit some divisive and unpleasant reactions, given today’s expanded understanding of mental illness and, arguably, a lot lesser tolerance for violence against women.
